Airplane Worry

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22

I’ve only flown on an airplane for two trips in my life. Sad, I know, but there you have it. We travelled by truck when the boys were young so our lab could go with us. Now, we travel by vehicle so the pup can travel too. I can’t remember where we were talking about going when the oldest yelled out, “Road trip!” I was surprised at how excited he got just thinking about travelling several hours in a vehicle. I asked the boys if they would prefer to travel a long distance by road or by air. They chose to go by road hands down! I was shocked. I expected them to feel left out that they’d never been on a plane before.

I’ll never forget my first airplane experience going to Walt Disney World in Florida. There were eight in our party, but half of us had never flown before! Oh boy. Kids are pretty adventurous, but not all grandmas care to leave their hubbies behind in the middle of a storm to go to the airport at dark to ride on something for the first time that they don’t have much trust in! I stayed with my grandma the night before, and she must have backed out of the trip a bazillion times during that short period. I was still up with her packing until we only had a few hours before leaving. She’d pack for a while, and then stop to let me know she wasn’t going. I’d talk her back into it, and she’d start packing again. It took forever!

When our ride came, the rain was pouring down and the lightning was flashing. In other words, we were going to die…in her mind. She WAS NOT getting on that plane if it was still storming. We assured her they wouldn’t let us go if it was dangerous. Here was the thing though, we had several hours before takeoff and worry wasn’t going to do one thing to change the weather! By the time we boarded the plane, the bad weather was gone and it wasn’t even an issue. We made it safely and had a wonderful vacation!

Worrying forces us to forfeit our joy. When we’re feeling worry and anxiety, we’re telling God that our problems are bigger than He is. God will give us peace; we need to just start thanking Him about everything we do have and how we’re thankful He’ll see us through whatever is stirring us up on the inside.

Today, trust that through God the righteous won’t be shaken. This doesn’t mean you won’t feel turbulence on a plane or in real life. There are times when we can feel pretty shaken, but by casting our cares on the Lord we can stay steady and be unshakable on the inside…in our spirit.

Give it over to Him and you’ll be able to breathe much easier again. I’ve heard it said that worry is like a rocking chair; it will give us something to do, but it won’t get us anywhere.
